This is the second year we've gone away on Drew's birthday, so it's good to be him. (And, of course, it wouldn't be a beach trip with me if I didn't get a weird sunburn. ^)
Dreamy.
On our second day we did a little spa morning (before my inevitable weird sunburn—nothing worse than a massage with a sunburn). We aren't usually spa people, but every now and then it's fun! Our resort's spa was super clean and beautiful. The only odd part was when my male masseuse spent the last ten minutes of my massage braiding my hair. That was definitely not something that typically happens in the states. Haha. But still so nice.
This was me literally the whole time. I read two books during our 6-day trip and listened to another one on audible. In case you are curious, my beach reading list was: An American Marriage, We Were the Lucky Ones and Crazy Rich Asians. Crazy Rich Asians and We Were the Lucky Ones were really good. An American Marriage was hard to get through and, honestly, a bit depressing.
On our third day we went on a catamaran snorkeling tour. It was by El Tour Caribe Tours and I highly recommend them if you're considering a trip to Punta Cana. Our boat was big enough for 18, but it was only us and one other couple on this random Tuesday morning—so it basically ended up being a private half day trip.
Our boat. ^ We came during hurricane season, aka so much seaweed.
We pulled over so that our captain could buy fresh crab from this salesman on the beach. Was actually so cool.
We did an hour of cruising around, an hour of snorkeling and an hour of swimming at a sand bar. I also had my first life-changing interaction with mango on this boating trip. It was SO good and our captain pulled it off of a tree in his yard. Are you kidding me. I bought a mango at HEB as probably my first purchase back in Texas, but it wasn't quite the same.
There's actually nothing worse than spending a lazy day under a palapa in paradise and then having to shower and get dressed up for dinner on vacation—am I right ladies? But, I will say, the restaurants at our resort were worth the blowdrying.
Birthday boy's first morning as a 28-year-old and looking mighty fine.
Worth whatever we paid for the ocean view. That is for certain.
Is it weird to show a picture of our room? I'm not sure, but if there are any other travel bugs out there like myself, then you're probably wondering so I'm going to throw one in.
We stayed at the Excellence Punta Cana. Beautiful, newly remodeled resort. There are actually two Excellence properties in Punta Cana, and in case you're planning a trip, the other couple on our catamaran tour was staying at the other property (Excellence El Carmen) and they loved theirs, too. So good luck choosing! ;)
On our last night, one of our favorite waiters reserved a table for us so there'd be no wait, put together a special three-course meal and wouldn't let us leave until we drank our entire bottle of wine. We loved him! So much fun and such a great meal.
As fun as it is to go, it's always even better to come back—especially to this redhead. Big thanks to grandparents who always volunteer to babysit so that we can take mom and dad trips.
Also so thankful for this husband of mine who tolerates my wanderlust—even though he doesn't share it. Haha. Love you big.
So where to next? In two weeks I'm going to New York with a friend, and then at the beginning of January Drew and I are going to Chicago and Michigan with Drew's best friend, Scott. Scott's family has a lakehouse in Michigan and we're going to go enjoy a quiet weekend with snow and wine and friends. We're staying at The Alise in Chicago—so if you have any Chicago favorites near that area, please let me know! New York was a last minute trip planned for the heck of it. My friend Hannah used to live there and I've basically been begging her to go with me for, like, two years. This will be my fifth time to go in three years and I'm certainly not complaining. I love it there.Tomorrow we have family pictures and this week Arden came home from daycare with a straight up shiner on her eye. Isn't that typical? So we're legitimately going to have to put concealer on her. This should be good. Wish us luck!
